Trump's Shutdown

I am just curious as to how people are perceiving this shutdown? I have a lot sympathy for those workers and businesses affected by the Trump Shutdown. As a former negotiator and arbitrator I find it fascinating how inept the "Deal Maker" is in negotiating on this.

  • Bearinfw my thoughts on that......... politics. Most Americans have the memory of a squirrel with ADHD and forget simple things. Most everyone knew that the Dems were going to gain power which would cause problems for Trump. So it was pushed down the road till now. Now he's putting his foot down to make the political statement that he can still get things done.

Seriously with the spending budget my only problem is the increasing amounts our government is spending. If they don't make cuts VERY soon we are going to be in a world of hurt. But the Dems love spending money and recently the Cons haven't acted all that conservatively.

  • All of this begs the question of why he didnt get wall funding while the Republicans had control of the House. If even the GOP wouldnt go for it that says a lot. It looks like he has just waited until Dems controlled the House so he can try to pin failure of the wall promise on the other party.

  • And the Democrats are saying no wall or bust. Thus it's both parties. Polls are completely unnecessary here. If people are willing to heap blame on one side of a two way street it just shows how ignorant they are of how our politics work. Government shutdowns have happened before and it has always been a two party problem.

  • Polls have consistently been showing that Trump gets the lion's share of the blame. And I think thats right. Trumps not willing to negotiate on border security. Its wall or bust.

  • Bearinfw I'm not talking about them winning over Republicans. I'm talking about them winning over the people in the middle. The ones who are not on the right, but not on the left either.

Also regardless of who "claims" it or not the shutdown can only continue if BOTH sides refuse to come to an agreement. If the right doesn't cave to the lefts demands it is still both sides fault. If the left doesn't cave to the right it is still both sides fault

  • Hmmm. Doankyl, it's not possible for Chuck and Nancy to win over the Fox News crowd. They could get down on their knees and bow to the greatness that is Trump and it wouldn't matter. The shutdown is all Trump's. I think some kind of compromise might be possible on "border security" (though not on anything called a wall), and the government could be reopened tomorrow. I don't think this is a huge issue with the public yet, but if it starts interfering with IRS refund checks, well, I wouldn't want to be whoever gets blamed for that ...

  • Honestly I find it troubling how idiotic the Dems are. Chuck and pelosi have an easy out. Give Trump 5 billion for the border wall and he will sign it............they could add a couple billion for daca, or get citizenship for millions of illegals, or hell anything they want. They could then use that to show their base how they got one over on "the great negotiator". This would be smart for them politically. Instead they continue to say stupid nonsense like "the wall is immoral" or "Trump is throwing a tantrum". This in turn makes them look even worse in the eyes of the people they NEED to win over.

  • He's not willing cuz its what Putin wants. He's in love with Putin and willing to destroy this country and hurt as many Americans as possible. My sister worked for US Customs for 30 yrs, she retired in August, "thank god"!! She's happy she doesnt have to work under him anymore.
